Dean Munro Welcomes New Vice Dean to School of Nursing and Health Studies

John M. Clochesy, PhD, MA, RN, has been named Vice Dean and Professor at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS).

He joins the School on August 15 from the University of South Florida College of Nursing in Tampa, where he is a professor and recently served as associate dean for both organizational integration and the Ph.D. program.

In his new role, Dr. Clochesy will report directly to SONHS Dean and Professor Cindy L. Munro, PhD, RN, ANP-BC, FAAN, FAANP, FAAAS.

“I look forward to supporting all aspects of the SONHS, including the dean, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners,” said Clochesy.

Announcing his appointment to the SONHS community on August 2, Dean Munro said, “I can’t think of a better fit than Dr. Clochesy for this integral senior leadership position. He will play a critical role in advancing our School’s strategic vision in the areas of mission-driven research, hemispheric leadership, and education for life.”

A fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and American College of Critical Care Medicine, Clochesy holds a Ph.D. in clinical nursing research from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and master’s degrees in psychology/diversity management and medical-surgical nursing from the Cleveland State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, respectively.

His research interests include empowering patients to reduce health disparities, the use of simulation and virtual reality to support health providers and consumers, and culturally relevant curriculum and instruction.

Dr. Clochesy, recipient of the 2017 USF College of Nursing Mentor in Research Award, is currently co-investigator on two virtual support studies funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research—one to assist older adults in managing their cancer symptoms and another to help educate caregivers of chronically critically ill patients on end-of-life decisions.

He and his interdisciplinary research team have published over 10 studies in major international journals on eSMART, an electronic self-management resource training platform designed to teach medically and socially disenfranchised groups how to communicate more effectively with their healthcare providers. One way eSMART allows patients to practice what they might say to a physician or pharmacist, for example, is through the use of a digital avatar.

Prior to joining USF in 2012, Clochesy held positions at Cleveland State and Case Western Reserve. He has held visiting professorships at Chang Gung University and the National Defense Medical Center in Taiwan, Dillard University in New Orleans, and the University of South Wales.
