Dr. Stephen McGhee Appointed Associate Dean for Nursing Undergraduate Programs

The School of Nursing and Health Studies at the University of Miami is pleased to announce Dr. Stephen McGhee has been named Associate Professor of Clinical and Associate Dean for Nursing Undergraduate Programs beginning May 15, 2019.

Dr. Stephen McGhee comes to UM’s School of Nursing and Health Studies from the University of South Florida College of Nursing (USF), where he served as the assistant dean for undergraduate and global programs, an assistant professor, the Coverdell Fellow Supervisor, and the director of Global Affairs.

Dr. McGhee’s clinical experience spans over 25 years, the majority of that time as an emergency room nurse practitioner at NHS Lothian Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland. Since 2010, he has also served as an expert witness in legal cases in England and Scotland involving death in custody, acute nurse settings, and nurse practitioner malpractice.

"His expertise in developing and leading global programs for undergraduate nursing students and his areas of research focus will be a great asset to our mission-driven research in global health and expanding efforts in the area of hemispheric leadership."

A 2016 American Academy of Nursing Jonas Policy Scholar, Dr. McGhee researches emergency medical care, nursing science, health psychology, and the development of global citizens in nursing. Recent scholarly publications have addressed the treatment of Zika and Hantavirus, nerve agent poisoning, and PTSD in military veterans, among other subjects.

Dr. McGhee coauthored The Principles and Practices of Nurse Education: Coursemate (Cengage Publishing, 2013). He is also a decorated lieutenant colonel in the British Armed Forces and a Commanding Officer Designate for the 225 Medical Regiment in Dundee, Scotland.

Prior to receiving his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at USF, he earned degrees at the University of West Scotland (RN), Glasgow Caledonian University (BSc), and Queen Margaret University (MSc, RNT, PGCE).
