Nursing in the Time of COVID-19

Pan American Health Organization features dispatch from SONHS clinical faculty on the front lines of the pandemic.

Clinical faculty at the School of Nursing and Health Studies not only teach, conduct research, and publish. They also practice as clinicians in South Florida, as well as globally as part of the school's hemispheric and global initiatives and its designation as a PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre.

Drs. Johis Ortega and Juan M. González, in addition to their faculty and administrative leadership roles at SONHS, are advanced practice nurses specializing in emergency department critical care in Miami, where they serve an adult population of all ages, genders, races, and nationalities. On a typical shift in the ED, they see cases of cardiac arrest, stroke, diabetes, infection, and injuries.

But in early March, everything changed. The coronavirus arrived in Miami.

"In this unprecedented time, we honor the nurses who are so courageously caring for patients on the front lines of the global coronavirus pandemic," said SONHS Dean Cindy L. Munro, PhD, RN, ANP-BC, FAAN, FAANP, FAAAS. "They exemplify the spirit of the WHO's International Year of the Nurse and Midwife."

Recently, Ortega, PhD, APRN, ACNP-BC, ENP-BC, FAAN, and González, DNP, APRN, AGACNP-BC, FNP-BC, CEN, shared their experiences providing emergency care in this new world for a series produced by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization.
