As part of the School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) international exchange program, four third-year nursing students from Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (UFV), a private university in Madrid, Spain, are spending a month-long observership at UHealth System hospital facilities through September 2023.
This is the second group of students from Spain’s UFV that the SONHS Office of Hemispheric and Global Studies has welcomed to the program this year, giving a total of eight UFV students so far the opportunity to spend time in Miami, absorbing the local culture and learning about the U.S. health care system.
Their visit includes touring the operating room, post-anesthesia care unit, gastrointestinal department, interventional radiology department, neonatal ICU, and various other departments at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and UHealth Tower. The students also had the chance to become acquainted with the School’s five-story Simulation Hospital Advancing Research and Education (S.H.A.R.E.®).
“Nurse mentors often become an inspiration to visiting students for their dedication and commitment to patient care as well as the skill and expertise they exhibit in their fields,” said Dr. Johis Ortega, SONHS Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Associate Dean for Hemispheric and Global Initiatives, and Professor of Clinical. “Positive exchanges like this can mark an exciting beginning for a lifelong commitment to the well-being of others and a profound appreciation for the remarkable world of global health care.”
The exchange between SONHS and UFV is new. The first cohort of SONHS nursing students traveled to Madrid in January for their immersive educational experience at UFV and two area hospitals. A second group visited in June.
