David R. Ellison, distinguished professor in the humanities in the College of Arts & Sciences and a leading expert on French author Marcel Proust, will receive the Faculty Senate’s Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award.
A member of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Ellison focuses his research on French literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. Ellison’s other scholarly interests include literary theory, European modernism, classicism and the Enlightenment.
He has written books on Proust and other French writers in both English and French, and other works addressing movements and trends in French fiction.
Ellison has received grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Rockefeller Foundation.
Ellison earned his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1975, and an A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1971.
The award will be given at an open ceremony on April 2; the University of Miami Community is invited to attend. At the event ceremony, Ellison will present “From Miami to Paris and Back, in Stages.”
The two other honorees will be Professor of Law Ricardo J. Bascuas, who will receive the Outstanding Teaching Award; and Sherrill H. “Sherri” Hayes, professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, who will be honored with the James W. McLamore Outstanding Service Award.
