UM Celebrates Brian Dursum for 40 Years of Service

By UM News
The University of Miami celebrated Brian Dursum, Director Emeritus of the Lowe Art Museum, for four decades of service at a reception at the museum on Wednesday, August 27, 2014.

Community leaders, University trustees and administrators, museum donors and members and Beaux Arts members joined the new Director of the Lowe Art Museum, Jill Deupi, for the event.

“(Dursum’s) grasp of and appreciation for Miami’s diversity helped position the Lowe as a cultural resource for art, scholarship, and education for our students and the South Florida community,” said President Donna E. Shalala, of her time working with Dursum. “You have selflessly devoted yourself to the Lowe and the University of Miami. We are so grateful for your hard work, creative spirit and great friendship.”

Lowe Art Museum Director Jill Deupi and Dean of
the College of Arts & Sciences Leonidas G. Bachas.

In honor of his dedicated service, the University purchased a print by Japanese artist Toyokuni I (1769-1825) titled Matsumoto Koshiro in Role, which was presented by College of Arts & Sciences Dean Leonidas G. Bachas.

“During Brian’s tenure, the Lowe doubled in physical size, its collection expanded to more than 19,000 works, and its endowment grew exponentially,” noted Dean Bachas. “You may already know about many of his accomplishments. He has also built countless relationships, as you can see by the many that have joined in this celebration, when you look about the room.”

Dursum gave a lighthearted speech, which began by thanking all the guests and by welcoming Deupi to the Lowe. “I had the pleasure over the past two weeks to work with Jill and I am thrilled, and I think you will be too, that she is our seventh director.”
