Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian Jon Meacham is sharing lessons on leadership from the American presidency in an event presented by the University of Miami College of Arts & Sciences Center for the Humanities: The Art of Leadership: Lessons from the American Presidency.
Open and free to the public, The Art of Leadership: Lessons from the American Presidency will take place Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 7 p.m., at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall on the Coral Gables campus. Meacham’s lecture is one of many hosted by the College of Arts & Sciences leading up to UM President Julio Frenk’s inauguration on January 29, 2016.
The event is sponsored by the Florida Humanities Council in partnership with the UM College of Arts & Sciences Center for the Humanities. It is part of the Pulitzer Prizes Centennial Campfires Initiative, a joint venture of the Pulitzer Prizes Board and the Federation of State Humanities Councils in recognition of the 2016 centennial of the prizes. The Florida Humanities Council selected only two Florida universities to host Meacham on this tour – the University of Miami and Florida State University.
In his presentation, Meacham explores what 21st-century leaders can learn about facing challenges of leadership by looking back at past American presidents. The presentation, non-partisan in content and tone, ranges from Thomas Jefferson’s pragmatism to Andrew Jackson’s management of public opinion, John F. Kennedy’s capacity to recover from his mistakes, and Ronald Reagan and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s ability to manage conflicting egos. Meacham will also discuss how history can inform the decisions all of us make every day in positions that demand creative and innovative solutions.
Meacham is the author of Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush(2015) and Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power (2012), a No. 1 New York Times bestseller that has been named one of the best books of the year by The New York Times Book Review and The Washington Post, among others. Meacham, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, is also a regular contributor on Meet the Press, Morning Joe, and Charlie Rose.
