“This is a celebrated event that happens every year where we recognize the achievements of the College’s faculty,” said Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences Leonidas Bachas.
The ceremony began with Dean Bachas congratulating the College’s newly promoted and tenured faculty. The award of tenure was given to Chantel Acevedo, English; Orlando Acevedo, chemistry; and Steven Safren, psychology. The following faculty members were promoted to associate professor with tenure: Jafari Allen, anthropology; Julia Dallman, biology; Amina Gautier, English; Wilson Shearin, classics; and Kiara Timpano, psychology. Kathryn Freeman, English, was promoted to full professor.
Dean Bachas also introduced four Cooper Fellows – one of the highest honors in the College – who will receive research and teaching support for a three-year term: Professor of Mathematics Ludmil Katzarkov; Professor of English Patrick McCarthy; Professor of Computer Science Mitsunori Ogihara; and Professor of English Frank Palmeri.
Three faculty members were selected for Scholarly & Creative Activities Recognition Awards - recognitions Dean Bachas said are for “assistant professors on the fast-track” - they are Justin Ritzinger, religious studies; Odelia Schwartz, computer science; and Lucina Uddin, psychology.
Faculty chairs and directors also paid tribute to College of Arts & Sciences retirees: George Alexandrakis, physics; Thomas Boswell and Peter Muller, geography & regional studies; Robert Chen, mathematics; Anne Cruz, modern languages & literatures; David Janos, biology; William Smith, political science; Stephen Stein, history; and Richard Tokarz, biology.
Scholarly and creative works, including books, which Dean Bachas said was the largest volume ever put forward by the College, were on display throughout the event.
