Presented every three years to a prominent faculty member at a Florida institution, the Manning J. Dauer Award recognizes awardees for their tireless and exemplary efforts in both national and international contributions to political science.

“It was a surprise to me to receive this award,” said Dr. West. “I am thrilled to receive the 2016 Manning J. Dauer Award. I have great respect for the work of Dr. Dauer and his service to the FPSA; it is extremely flattering to be included in the same list as Dr. Dauer and past recipients."

Dr. West first got involved with the FPSA in 1981, shortly after arriving at UM as a faculty member. He has held multiple positions at the association including program chair, executive council member, vice president, and president. He was also an editorial board member at the Florida Political Chronicle, an annual publication of the FPSA.

“I have fond memories of working with the FPSA over the past three decades in various capacities,” said Dr. West. “For the past several years I have enjoyed being section chair for panel and paper proposals dealing with public policy and public administration.”

Dr. West received his bachelor’s in political science from the University of Utah in 1965. He went on to receive his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1969. He has published nine books and over 100 articles in many political science publications. In 2014, the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) recognized him for outstanding achievements and contributions to public service. He was awarded the Paul P. Van Riper Award for excellence and service, a national accolade.

“Jon is not only an outstanding researcher and a prolific writer, but throughout his career he has been a terrific mentor,” said Dr. Richard Feiock, friend and professor of public administration and policy at Florida State University. “He contributed to the successful careers of many scholars including myself. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of the Manning J. Dauer award than Jon.”

Dr. West was unavailable to receive the award personally during the annual FPSA meeting at Florida Southern University, due to his commitment to teaching intensive graduate courses during the weekend of the award presentation. Dr. Richard Brumback, a colleague of Dr. West in the UM public administration program, received the award on his behalf.
