In 2005, Dr. Tosney joined the university as chair of the Department of Biology, a position she held until 2014. Dr. Tosney was the principal investigator of the million-dollar NSF ADVANCE career development award that resulted in the establishment of the UM SEEDS Program (Scientists and Engineers Expanding Diversity and Success) that supported women and minority faculty in STEM. She also played a key role in securing the $18 million NIH stimulus grant that funded the Neuroscience Annex. Kathryn was a force of nature and a powerful voice for conservation in the Galapagos.
During her time at the U, Dr. Tosney was usually found in the company of her beloved dog, Sunny Day. Dr. Tosney retired to Corvallis, OR in 2018.
