Dear Students, Staff, and Faculty,
The recent election has generated strong feelings among our students, faculty, and staff. This is a good time to remind ourselves that in the School of Education and Human Development we are committed to well-being in multicultural communities. We are a multicultural community, and it is incumbent upon us to protect it. Well-being is at the core of our mission and permeates all that we strive to accomplish in our research, teaching, and service.
People of all backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and identities should feel welcome in our school and in our university community. Open, respectful airing of different opinions is not only possible; it should be standard operating procedure. We trust that in this moment of polarization we can behave in exemplary fashion.
We have an opportunity to model a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in our classes, in our discourse, in our personal interactions, and in our communications. We can actively promote constructive dialogue and do our best to make sure that all feel welcome. We do not tolerate lack of respect and actions that make people feel unwelcome.
Each of us, and all of us together, can provide reassurance that the well-being of every one of us matters and that we are determined to uphold wellness and fairness.
