What is your favorite vacation spot? OR Where is the most interesting place you’ve visited?

My favorite vacation spot is right here in Florida, the lovely island of Key West. I love its historic sites, beaches and lively nightlife. My favorite spots here include the restaurants on Duval Street and the Southernmost Point Buoy, where I can stand 90 miles away from the country that my parents came from, Cuba. Key West is truly a special getaway for me and my family.

What is your favorite movie and why?

I love way too many movies to narrow it down to one, so I’ll give three top favorites. First, Jerry Maguire. Every single time I see the part that Jerry and Rod look at each other after the football game and they point at each other and say you! I cry every time I see that. I love how they believed in each other and after all the ups and downs they succeeded together. Second, is the French romantic comedy, Amelie. It makes me smile every time I watch this movie. Lastly, White Chicks. Oh and Hitch! I truly can talk about movies all day and quote them. Love!

What is your favorite hobby or thing to do on weekends?

For hobbies, I love, love love cosmetics!! I enjoy learning about the latest make-up trends and techniques. During the weekends, my family and I often enjoy quality time together by heading out to the beach with our doggie. I like sitting on the warm sand and taking-in the fresh ocean air, while admiring Miami’s breathtaking views. That’s definitely a favorite!

What is special about the place you grew up? OR What is your favorite childhood memory?

I was born and raised in Miami, the place where others vacation. From Florida City to Miami Beach, there’s always something delicious to eat or drink, something fun and adventurous to experience and something beautiful to see. Aside from its beautiful views, beaches and architecture, Miami is a special place because of its international diversity. Miami is a melting pot that educates us all about the many cultures surrounding us in the community. All this makes Miami a pretty special place to grow-up in. I feel lucky. When my siblings and I were little, my parents would buy a bucket of chicken and take me and my other 4 siblings to Key Biscayne (El Farito).

What is something nobody would guess about you (that you are willing to disclose!)?

One thing that nobody would guess about me is that although I love the ocean and have many memories of going to the beach with my family, I don’t know how to swim!

What was your first impression of UM (or SEHD) when you first started working/going to school here?

I started working at UM’s School of Education and Human Development in 2003. At first, I was hired as a temporary employee to work on the AMSI program as an assistant. My first impression of UM was that it was wonderful! I liked that there was a family like atmosphere here. Three months later, I became a permanent employee, working in the same school. I’ve enjoyed working at UM so much, that 15 years later, I still continue to be proud, that I am part of the UM family in the SEHD.
