The dissertation defense took place in the historic library of the University on November 14, 2019. The international committee was comprised of Dr. Signorile of the University of Miami, Coral gables, FL (President), Dr. Anthony Blazevich of Edith Cowan University, Australia, and Dr. Pedro E. Alcaraz Ramón of Universidad Catolica San Antonio de Muricia.

On November 13, preceding the dissertation, all committee members gave presentations on their research to the faculty and students of the department. Mr. Alcazar’s dissertation, entitled “Muscle Power as a Countermeasure of Functional Ability Decline during Aging: Age Trajectories, Assessment, Training and Application in the Clinical Setting”, was 501 pages and contained 10 articles, either published or in review, that reflected his research as a doctoral student.

Following a one-hour presentation and subsequent two-hour questioning session, Mr. Alcazar was recommended for his Doctor of Philosophy degree which was to be formally awarded at the end of the semester by la Comisión Permanente de la Escuela Internacional de Doctorado (EID) de la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha. Visiting the “city of three cultures” and serving as a member of an international committee to evaluate the candidate’s eligibility for his degree left a lasting affect on Dr. Signorile and furthered the standing of the University of Miami as an internationally renowned center for academics and research.
