Ms. Emily Panasowich, Assistant Athletic Director for Community Engagement & Events invited Dr. Gigi Gilbert, Scholar in Residence, to attend the annual Elementary School Day women’s basketball game. The event was held on November 13, 2019 at the Watsco Center. The basketball game vs. North Florida, had a final count of 3,700 students from 31 schools in grades Prek-Grade 5 that attended the field trip. The purpose of the annual event is to expose elementary students to the University of Miami, to promote the Women’s Basketball Program, and to extend the student’s learning beyond sports.
Dr. Gilbert will assist with this by collaborating with Ms. Panosowich to develop a thematic unit that connects parts of the elementary curriculum to the basketball game. The unit will include instructional activities that the students will complete before and after attending the game. The activities will cover the core curriculum areas of Reading, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. In addition, the instructional activities will infuse technology, writing, geography and art.
