Academy of Emerging Enrollment Leaders Conference Empowers Higher Education Professionals

The University of Miami hosted the inaugural Academy of Emerging Enrollment Leaders Conference on January 6-7, 2025, at the Watsco Center.

The University of Miami's School of Education and Human Development, under the leadership of Dean Kohn-Wood, in collaboration with Dr. John Haller, hosted the inaugural Academy of Emerging Enrollment Leaders Conference on January 6-7, 2025, at the Watsco Center at the University of Miami. This two-day event brought together higher education professionals to explore strategies for fostering resilience, leading change, and ensuring institutional sustainability in the evolving landscape of enrollment in higher education.

As higher education institutions face unprecedented challenges, from shifting demographics to financial pressures, it is essential to equip leaders with the tools and strategies to not only navigate but thrive in these dynamic environments.” stated Dean Kohn-Wood. 

The conference commenced with an opening address by Dr. Haller, setting the stage for the sessions ahead. Justin Draeger, Senior Vice President at Strada Education Foundation, delivered an insightful keynote titled "Navigating the Future of Higher Education: Trends, Trust, and Transformation." He explored systemic trends affecting enrollment, public perceptions of affordability and trust, and strategies for building resilient, sustainable institutions. Draeger emphasized the importance of transparency, investing in human capital, and supporting student success. 

Following the keynote, Daniel Barkowitz led participants through several case studies directly related to Draeger's session, providing practical applications of the discussed strategies. The evening concluded with a networking reception, allowing attendees to connect and discuss the day's insights. 

The second day began with a breakfast session, offering an opportunity for informal networking. Dr. Willy Prado, Interim Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at the University of Miami, welcomed attendees to the campus, highlighting the institution's commitment to higher education leadership. 

Dr. Haller returned to discuss how enrollment management professionals can lead strategic efforts to strengthen their institutions' resilience amid challenges such as demographic shifts, financial pressures, and societal change. Key discussion points included cultivating student demand by leveraging value propositions and leading through diverse enrollment streams. 

Georgette Edmondson-Wright focused her discussion on strategies that connect student success outcomes to enrollment goals, ensuring long-term stability and success for institutions. Key discussion points included leading with purpose, student success outcomes and institutional positioning, enrollment managers' roles in driving student success outcomes, as well as culture shifting and leading change. 

A short intermission allowed attendees to refresh and network. Liz Cheron addressed the challenges faced by enrollment management professionals, offering strategies to build personal and professional resilience. Key takeaways included developing emotional intelligence and adaptability to manage stress and uncertainty, cultivating a growth mindset, building supportive networks and leveraging mentorship, balancing professional demands with personal well-being, and using reflective practices to stay aligned with personal and institutional goals. 

A midday break provided attendees with a chance to relax and continue networking. Daniel Barkowitz and Virginia Flowers, from FA Solutions, who served as a partial event sponsor, explored actionable strategies to build professional resilience and maintain focus during periods of significant change. Participants examined understanding the dynamics of transformational change, developing adaptability, strengthening emotional resilience, leveraging collaboration and communication, and aligning personal values with institutional transformation. 

Laurie Koehler emphasized the importance of personal well-being in leadership, providing strategies to enhance physical and mental health. Key topics included the science of resilience, strategies to enhance personal well-being, building resilience through purpose and alignment, and leading by example to inspire resilience in teams. 

The conference concluded with a session guiding participants through the creation of a comprehensive resilience plan at institutional, personal, and professional levels. Interactive exercises and real-world examples helped attendees develop a customized resilience framework tailored to their unique challenges and goals. 

The Academy of Emerging Enrollment Leaders Conference provided a platform for professionals to engage with experts, share experiences, and develop skills essential for navigating the evolving landscape of enrollment in higher education. Participants left with actionable strategies to foster resilience, lead change, and ensure institutional sustainability.
