Thomas Sleeper, professor of instrumental performance and program director of orchestral activities at the Frost School of Music, is active as both composer and conductor. He conducts the prestigious Frost Symphony Orchestra at the University of Miami Frost School of Music and will start his fifth season as guest conductor for the New Philharmonic Orchestra in Florida. He also now leads the South Florida Virtuosi – an elite chamber orchestra serving the South Florida area.
Sleeper had numerous premieres last season with two new operas and an epic orchestral song cycle with writer Jane Alison. Screenings continue around the world for the movie “One Water” (for which Sleeper wrote and conducted the score with the Russian National Symphony) with over 30 screenings this year. The Discovery Channel will feature the work in a special edition this season.
Sleeper is currently writing a saxophone concerto for Dale Underwood to be premiered by the Florida Youth Orchestra on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington next spring, and completing music for a new documentary film by Ali Habashi - The Silver Mirror.
