Dr. Melvin L. Butler Receives NAACP Image Award from University of Miami Chapter

On April 6, the red carpet rolled out for a unique version of the NAACP Image Awards held by UMiami’s NAACP chapter on campus for the first time in the University of Miami’s history. Appearing on this auspicious occasion was Frost School’s Associate Professor in the Department of Musicology. Dr. Melvin L. Butler later was honored with the prestigious Image Award for Chairman of the Year.

History professor Donald Spivey spent 12 years researching and writing “If You Were Only White: The Life of Leroy ‘Satchel’ Paige.” Now, Apple Studios has acquired the rights to the text for a dramatic series on Negro Leagues Baseball, using the life of Paige as a backdrop.
