The residents of a sleepy English village are aghast to they learn that unsullied young women are nowhere to be found. Without a suitable candidate to be queen of the village’s May Day festival, timid Albert is crowned “King of the May.” A night of carousing ensues, leaving the town elders scandalized and his friends impressed. Contemporaries of Britten speculated that Albert was a satirical self-portrait of the composer himself.
Frost Opera Theater will by joined by members of the Frost Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alan Johnson.
Dean Southern stages the production, and the set design is the result of a second collaboration between Frost Opera Theater and the University of Miami School of Architecture. Simone Meeks’s design was chosen from among the students enrolled in a fall 2010 course, led by François Lejeune, with the objective of designing a set for the current production.
Albert Herring will be performed on March 3, 4, and 5 at 8:00 p.m. and on March 6 at 3:00 p.m. in Gusman Concert Hall. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $10 for UM faculty and staff, and $5 for students and senior citizens. For tickets and information, please call 305-284-4886.
