Frost student Emmet Cohen wins Phillips Jazz PIano Competition.

Frost School of Music student Emmet Cohen was named the winner of the Phillips Jazz Piano Competition in Pensacola, Florida on April 1, 2011. He studies piano with Martin Bejerano and Shelly Berg at Frost and also plays jazz organ.

The Kathleen T. and Philip B. Phillips, M.D. Jazz Piano Competition is a nationally recognized jazz performance competition sponsored by the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida, and made possible by the generosity of the Phillips family. The annual competition attracts outstanding young musicians and judges from around the country and is open to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students, ages 17-35, at colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Emmet Cohen and other finalists presented a free public performance at the Historic Saenger Theatre in Pensacola, Florida, on Friday, April 1, 2011. The event coincided with Pensacola’s JazzFest. As the winner of the competition, Cohen also presented a concert for the 2011 Pensacola JazzFest on Saturday, April 2.

Emmet Cohen is also one of five finalists for the prestigious 2010/11 American Pianist’s Association’s Cole Porter Fellowshipwhich will take place in Indianapolis, May, 2011.
