The University of Miami Frost School of Music presents musical icon, Gunther Schuller, as part of the 2011-2012 Stamps Family Distinguished Visitors Series. Schuller will lecture at the University of Miami campus on September 30 at 3:30 p.m. in the Clarke Recital Hall, and appear in concerts with the Frost Symphony Orchestra and Frost Chamber Players on October 1 and October 2 (respectively). Both performances will be at 8 p.m. in the Gusman Concert Hall.
The free lecture, Into the Creative Mind of a Total Musician, by prize-winning composer Schuller will discuss current music trends as well as the history of music. Admission is free, but a ticket is required.
Gunther Schuller is one of America’s most distinguished musical icons, a winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the MacArthur Foundation “genius” award, as well as two Guggenheim fellowships. He has composed over 160 original works, helped trigger the ragtime revival in the 1970s, and written definitive books on the history of jazz and French horn technique. He has taught composition at Yale University, served as president of the New England Conservatory, and has been elected an NEA Jazz Master and to membership in the Classical Music Hall of Fame. Today maintains a busy conducting schedule.
The Stamps Family Charitable Foundation Distinguished Visitors Series was established in 2003 through the extraordinary vision and generous commitment of Roe and Penny Stamps. The annual series brings an array of significant artists, scholars and music industry leaders to the Frost School of Music for the educational and artistic enrichment of its students, as well as the community.
The October 1 concert, Frost Symphony Orchestra - French Horn Celebration, will feature Schuller’s Concerto No. 1 for Horn and other classic works for French horn and orchestra and on October 2, Schuller will conduct the Frost Chamber Players and introduce his new composition, Quintet for Horn and Strings, featuring hornist Richard Todd and the Bergonzi String Quartet. Tickets range from $15 to $85.
