Short has thrilled audiences around the globe in a wide range of repertoire ranging from Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, to Verdi’s Attila and Don Carlos, and Bizet’s Carmen. Also showcasing extensive work in Europe, he was noted in Opera News for his "requisite big sound ... [and] expressive, almost delicate style." He also enjoys an active festival and concert schedule. He has worked with the Boston Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Detroit Symphony, the New York Pops Orchestra, Opera Orchestra of New York, Radio France Orchestra, and the Winter Olympics Festival Orchestra for the opening ceremonies in Nagano, Japan. He was a prizewinner in numerous competitions including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the Opera America Competition and received awards and grants from the Sullivan Foundation, the Shoshana Foundation, and Opera Index.

Since bass-baritone Kevin Short joined the Frost Vocal Performance faculty in August 2013, he has certainly made his mark on Miami and across Florida. A frequent artist at Sarasota Opera, he is currently singing the challenging title role in their production of Wagner’s Flying Dutchman, a role he has performed before at Indianapolis Opera, Stadttheater Bern, and most recently in Croatia, he expounds upon the task of singing Wagner, and his return to Sarasota in an interview with the company here. It is hard to believe with his docket of credits - he performs frequently with many leading companies in the United States, including the Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles Opera, and Washington National Opera, among others - Short had yet to sing at Miami’s own top-tier house, Florida Grand Opera (FGO), until this year, making his FGO and role debut as Zaccaria in their production of Verdi’s Nabucco in January. Of his performance, the South Florida Classical Review expressed “bass-baritone Kevin Short brought the necessary commanding sound and presence to the role. Despite the burden of playing an Old Testament prophet, he was never ponderous, singing with expressive lyricism and agility as he lectured and encouraged the Hebrews.” Local news outlet WSVN-TV recently interviewed Short on his FGO debut, and Short made applicable and intriguing parallels to his career as a former college wrestler and now as an international opera star.
