Frost Dean Shelly Berg was named a 2017 Knight Arts Champion by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Frost Dean Shelly Berg was named a 2017 Knight Arts Champion by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and awarded a $10,000 contribution to the arts organization of his choice. Recipient of Berg's gift was The Donna E. Shalala MusicReach Program on behalf of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. The award-winning youth outreach program uses music as a motivating tool to provide underserved children and teens in Miami-Dade County with positive life choices and a gateway for higher education. Berg is part of an elite group of 25 arts and civic leaders honored by the Knight Foundation for their vision, courage and tenacity in building Miami's cultural community.

A special awards ceremony was held on December 4th at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, followed by a communitywide celebration that included performances in the adjacent Knight Plaza. The Knight Arts Champion award was created in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the Knight Arts Challenge, which funds the best ideas for bringing South Florida together through the arts.
