Bring your flute and join us as The Frost School of Music presents Sir James Galway Day on Friday, March 9, 2018. Hosted by the acclaimed Frost Flute Studio, this one-time special event is your opportunity to get up close and personal with internationally renowned flute legend Sir James Galway. Revel in Sir James’ expertise, humor and advice as the “The Master of the Flute” leads two thrilling masterclasses, while members of the Frost Flute Studio perform select pieces under his direction. Classes will be held at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm in Maurice Gusman Concert Hall on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus. Both masterclasses are free of charge and open to the public.

UM Distinguished Presidential Scholar, Sir James Galway is known for his enormously successful career as a performer and for inspiring flute students with his artistry and masterful teaching. “It is a great honor to have Sir James at the Frost School and we are so happy to present Sir James Galway Day as the culmination of his residency with us,” says associate professor Trudy Kane, director of the Frost Flute Studio. “This event will be a wonderfully large dose of Sir James for flutists of all ages. There is something for everyone.” Sir James Galway’s residency spanned three-weeks throughout the school year, giving Frost students the chance to meet and engage with Galway.

As part of Sir James Galway Day, Flute World, America’s #1 flute specialty house, will be exhibiting in the Gusman Hall lobby. They will also have Sir James recordings, books and Galway endorsed flutes.

From 3:00-5:30 pm, experience Sir James as he coaches four Frost Flute Studio students performing two modern concerti commissioned for Galway himself. Graduate and undergraduate members of the studio will present the William Bolcom Lyric Concerto, and the Lowell Liebermann Concerto for Flute.

From 7:00-9:45 pm, Galway leads a traditional evening with exercises and instruction utilizing the music of the masters. Five additional members of the Frost Flute Studio will perform the following treasured works in the flute repertoire: Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonata in G minor; André Jolivet’s Chant de Linos; Lowell Liebermann’s Sonata for Flute and Piano; Bohuslav Martinu’s Sonata for Flute and Piano; and Mozart’s Concerto in G Major.
