Frost students compete to perform at Carnegie Hall at the inaugural Artist Launch program

The Frost School of Music at the University of Miami proudly presents its best and brightest classical artists competing for the Inaugural Artist Launch Award to be held Tuesday, April 20th, 2021 at 7:30 p.m.

The competition will be live-streamed for virtual audience participation from UM’s Gusman Hall in front of a limited capacity audience of Frost faculty and students who will be following strict COVID protocol.

An esteemed panel of guest judges include: award-winning pianist alumna Lindsay Garritson (D.M.A. ’20), renowned festival producer Charles Letourneau (Festival Napa Valley, Tokyo’s Mostly Mozart, among others), internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano and Frost School’s 2020-2021 Chamber Music Artist-In-Residence Alicia Hall Moran, and GRAMMY-winning Maestro alumnus Cristian Mãcelaru (B.M. ’03). Judges will participate via Zoom.

The voting process is as follows:

  • Voting will be open between 7:30 – 9:35 p.m.
  • Cast your vote by texting "vote" to (866) 824-0688
  • The total votes cast by judges plus the in-person and virtual audience will determine the winners.
  • Winners will be announced from 9:45 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

"There were 28 applicants from the instrumental, keyboard, and vocal departments for the inaugural installment," states Artist Launch director Valerie Coleman, Assistant Professor/Performance, Chamber Music, and Entrepreneurship. "It was a highly competitive round and selection criteria was based on performance excellence, comportment and connection, quality of overall application per the set guidelines, and additionally for chamber groups: a demonstrated commitment towards long term ensemble establishment."

The 2021 Screening Panel was Artist Launch Director Valerie Coleman, pianist Ana Cristea, violinist Karen Lord-Powell, and Alicia Hall Moran.

The 2021 Artist Launch finalists who will go on to compete on April 20th are:
  • Deco Saxophone Quartet
  • Andrea Gonzalez-Caballero, guitar
  • Khaos Wind Quintet
  • Rexa Han, piano
  • Priscila Navarro, piano
  • Antek Olesik, percussion
  • Ashley Shalna, soprano

Alternates:
  • Molly Blumenfeld, soprano (category: solo voice)
  • Dmytro Gnativ/Kosuke Matsuda, flute/percussion (category: chamber music)
  • Sophia Pileggi, piano (category: solo piano)
  • Yana Yan, flute (category: solo instrument)

Please note: The Carnegie Hall performance will take place during the first quarter of 2022.
