Jorge Mejia receives the 2020 Distinguished Alumnus Award

The Frost School of Music at the University of Miami is pleased to announce Jorge Mejia, B.M. ’96, has been chosen as the recipient of the school’s most prestigious honor the Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2020.

Jorge Mejia is a Colombian-born, Latin GRAMMY® Award-nominated composer and pianist. As President & CEO for Sony Music Publishing Latin America & US Latin, he has also been recognized as one of Billboard’s Latin Power Players for every year Billboard has held the distinction, including most recently, in 2020.

In commenting Dean Shelly Berg stated: "Jorge is an exemplary recipient of the Frost Distinguished Alumnus Award. His passion and drive has catapulted him to a career as one of the top executives in the music industry as well as a brilliant artist, musician, and composer. Jorge is a prime example of the success we hope our alumni will achieve with the foundation of a Frost School education. We are so proud of his achievements and congratulate him on receiving this honor."

As a composer, Mejia is known for his rigorous and eclectic work in classical music, with performances throughout Latin America and beyond. He recently composed the music for the digital world-premiere of the Miami City Ballet’s new work entitled Places by internationally renowned choreographer Claudia Schreier. Commissioned as part of two new balletic works created for the digital screen, Places made its world debut Thursday, November 29, 2020.
