The University of Miami School of Law is known for producing graduates who are leaders. This now extends to School of Law deans in leadership positions at two of the most prominent non-profit legal industry organizations.
Amy Perez, associate dean of the Office of Career and Professional Development, has joined the board of directors at the National Association for Law Placement. On June 1, Katrin Hussmann Schroll, associate dean of Enrollment Management, Integrated Marketing, and Data Analytics, became a member of the Law School Admission Council’s Board of Trustees and Chair of the Product Strategy and Innovation.
Advising the Careers of Legal Professionals
Perez has overseen the career office at Miami Law since 2023, and under her leadership, 2024 graduates had the highest recorded employment rate in the school's history. As the OCPD’s associate dean, she leads all aspects of career services for UM Law’s students and alumni. She has worked in higher education since 2008, and her association with NALP has been nearly as long. Comprised of more than 3,000 law firm and law school professionals, NALP serves as the authoritative source of research and data on legal employment and recruiting – including employment outcomes, salaries, and hiring trends – and is instrumental in advancing fair and ethical recruiting processes within the legal industry.
Prior to serving on the board of directors, Perez held leadership roles as the chair of the Lawyer and Law Student Well-Being Task Force, Judicial Clerkships Section, and Newer Professionals Section, and vice chair of the Annual Conference Planning Committee. She has also served on the Nominating Committee and as a faculty member of the Newer Professionals’ Forum. Perez was recognized with NALP’s Service Excellence Award in 2019 and the Award of Distinction for Professional Development and Training in 2010.
“My leadership experiences within NALP and the invaluable mentorship of its members have been instrumental in shaping my 17-year career in law school higher education," said Perez. "From my early involvement with the Newer Professionals Section to leading the career office at the eighth-largest law school in the country, I have consistently deepened my connection to the people and institutions NALP serves. I am passionate about NALP’s mission, and it is the honor of my career to serve on the board of directors."
Supporting Candidates in the Law Admissions Process
At the School of Law, Schroll provides strategic leadership, policy direction, and operational oversight for the offices of Admissions and Student Recruitment, Enrollment Management, Law Communications, and the DataHub. Under her deanship, the School of Law has consistently welcomed the highest credentialed classes in the institution's history.
For fifteen years, she has been involved with LSAC, where she previously served on the Board of Trustees from 2021 to 2023 and chaired the Schools and Candidates Committee and the Misconduct and Irregularities in the Admission Process Subcommittee. Over the years, Schroll served on the Audit Committee, the Information Services Division Advisory Group, the Annual Meeting Planning Work Group, the Newcomers Work Group, the National Recruitment Work Group, and the Graduate Programs Work Group.
LSAC, an organization of over 200 member schools, has the mission to advance law and justice by promoting fairness in law school admission and supporting the learning journey from prelaw through practice.
“LSAC fosters a sense of community, and my involvement with LSAC has provided an opportunity to actively contribute to the advancement of legal education by reinforcing and enhancing the pathways into the legal profession. Throughout my career, it has offered me the chance to learn from leaders across the country and has supported my professional growth, enabling me to lead cross-functional, forward-thinking teams in navigating the evolving and complex landscape of higher education,” said Schroll.
Interim Dean Patricia Sanchez Abril encourages the School of Law’s active role in two leading organizations that shape legal education, as this highlights the school's commitment to enriching the academic environment and providing students with enhanced opportunities for professional growth.
“By assuming these positions, Amy Perez and Katrin Hussmann Schroll bring invaluable insights and experiences back to our institution,” said Abril. “The University of Miami School of Law has a seat at the table and an influential voice at a time of change for legal education and industry.”
