In the wake of a devastating hurricane, a small group of visionaries gathered in Coral Gables with one bold goal: to build a university in the subtropics. Originally slated for 1927, the law school opened ahead of schedule as demand surged. On September 8, 1926, the mandate became official—and weeks later, classes began. By 1928, Richmond A. Rasco took the helm as the first dean. When the inaugural class graduated in 1929, they weren’t just receiving diplomas—they were launching a century of leadership and advocacy.
A legacy built brick by brick
From its start in a modest apartment building, the University of Miami School of Law has grown into a nationally respected institution. Over the past century, graduates have shaped the legal landscape—from courtrooms across the country to leadership roles in the American Bar Association and executive positions in global firms. Their impact reflects a tradition of excellence that continues to define the School of Law.
“This milestone is a tribute to our rich legacy,” said interim dean Patricia Sanchez Abril. “We honor a hundred years of scholarship, advocacy, and service that have shaped leaders in every corner of the legal profession. Together, we look forward to the next 100 years of excellence, committed to educating the next generation of lawyers who will impact the law and drive meaningful change.”
Centennial highlights
To mark the centennial, the School of Law is launching the Law 100 Tour—a nationwide series of alumni events bringing the spirit of Coral Gables to cities across the country.
On campus, beloved traditions return with a modern twist. The iconic “Beer on the Slab” becomes Beer on The Bricks, inviting the law school community and alumni to reconnect, share memories, and meet the students who will lead the next century.
Looking ahead
The centennial isn’t just about honoring the past—it’s a springboard for the future. The School of Law remains committed to advancing legal innovation, deepening community partnerships, and empowering and preparing students to tackle tomorrow’s challenges.
Throughout the year, the community will be invited to engage through signature events, a dedicated Centennial webpage, a series of commemorative stories, social media moments, and more, all highlighting the School of Law’s most influential milestones.
A century after it began as an ambitious idea in a young city, the School of Law stands as a testament to resilience and excellence—with its most exciting chapters still ahead.
