What aspects of the curriculum or faculty had the most significant impact on your legal education and career trajectory?
The courses that had the greatest impact on my legal education were Administrative Law with Professor Michael Froomkin and the externship I completed with USA Broadcasting (WAMI on Miami). Professor Froomkin’s Administrative Law classes taught me how regulatory frameworks are built, how agencies exercise authority, and how rules are applied in real‑world settings. More importantly, they developed the analytical skills I rely on today to evaluate risk, understand regulatory decision‑making, and advise clients operating in heavily regulated industries.
My externship with USA Broadcasting (WAMI on Miami) was also foundational. While the externship program was still evolving at the time, the experience provided early exposure to the role of in‑house counsel within a business environment. It reinforced how legal advice must be tailored to business objectives and delivered in a way that is clear, practical, and actionable. Working alongside business leaders demonstrated how legal analysis informs operational decisions and how lawyers add value by integrating legal requirements into commercial strategy an approach that has shaped my practice throughout my in‑house career.
How did your education at the University of Miami School of Law prepare you for your career?
My education at the University of Miami School of Law prepared me for my career by teaching me how to think critically and strategically about complex legal issues. Working in the cruise industry, a highly regulated, international business requires the ability to understand how individual legal issues fit within a broader operational, regulatory, and commercial framework. UM Law trained me to examine issues deeply, assess risk from multiple perspectives, and apply cross‑border legal analysis to determine which laws and regulatory regimes control in any given situation.
That ability to see both the “big picture” and the critical details has been essential throughout my career, particularly in advising global businesses and structuring complex transactions. Without that foundation, it would be difficult to navigate the regulatory, jurisdictional, and business challenges inherent in my current role as general counsel.
What opportunities or connections did you gain at the law school, and how did they influence your career?
My education at the University of Miami School of Law prepared me for my career in a very practical and lasting way through the privilege of working for Ben Kuehne, a fellow Miami Law alumnus, while I was a student. That experience set the course for my professional life. Balancing the demands of law school with the responsibility of working in a high‑stakes legal environment required discipline, sound judgment, and the ability to prioritize effectively skills that have remained critical throughout my career.
Beyond those practical lessons, observing Ben’s approach to the practice of law left a profound impression. His integrity, professionalism, and unwavering belief that the Constitution applies to everyone or it applies to no one fundamentally shaped how I view the role and responsibility of a lawyer. To this day, I look to Ben as a guiding light and strive to reflect his discipline, ethical judgment, and commitment to excellence in everything I do, including my current role as general counsel.
