University of Miami Libraries (UML) recently welcomed Joy M. Doan as the new head of the Marta and Austin Weeks Music Library. Joy is an accomplished music librarian with a strong commitment to information literacy, faculty and student engagement, and diversity and inclusion.
Prior to joining the University of Miami, Joy served as the Music Instruction and Research Librarian and Radio, Film & Television Librarian at Northwestern University. In this role, she oversaw public services operations in the Music Library, taught information literacy classes, and participated in Faculty Learning Communities, among other responsibilities. Joy has also worked as a liaison librarian at Cal State University, Northridge, and as a music librarian at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). While at UCLA, she developed strategies to expand the collection of multimedia music resources and coordinated public programming for Jazz Appreciation Month that included exhibitions and performances.
Joy has served as an Institute of Jazz Studies Fellow at Rutgers University and as an Association of Research Libraries and Music Library Association (MLA) Diversity & Inclusion Fellow. She has also earned grants to support professional development and research projects. She is a frequent presenter at MLA Annual Meetings and has published articles and reviews in library and music journals on information literacy, library-faculty relationships, libraries and social justice, mentoring, and film music resources. Joy holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from San Jose State University, an M.A. in Music History from Case Western Reserve University, and a B.A. in English and Music from the University of Michigan.
In her new role at UML, Joy will lead a subject-specialty library staffed by a talented team that curates collections of music scores, books, sound recordings, musical theater archives, manuscripts, and other resources; offers learning and research services, including consultations and instructional sessions; provides more than 150 seats for individual and collaborative study; offers access to music databases, streaming music, and online scores; and provides music-related technology tools and resources, including a Creative Studio and Audio Production Booth. She will also serve as an ex officio member of the Frost School of Music Library Advisory Committee.
