UML appoints new Director of Learning Commons
Roxane Pickens, UML's new director of the Learning Commons.

University of Miami Libraries (UML) is pleased to announce the appointment of Roxane Pickens as the new director of the Learning Commons. Since joining UML in 2017 as the Assistant Director of the Learning Commons, Roxane has played an essential leadership role in ensuring the successful opening of the Learning Commons in its newly-renovated space at the Otto G. Richter Library. She has skillfully facilitated and developed collaborative partnerships with academic service units, integrated experimental services, recruited new employees, and organized orientation and workshop programming, among many other activities that have contributed actively to the growth of our libraries. A member of the University of Miami's academic faculty from 2007 to 2017, and a library faculty member beginning in 2017, Roxane has quickly become an inspiring advocate for the role of libraries in advancing our teaching, learning, and research mission.

As Director of the Learning Commons, Roxane works collaboratively with UML and administrative and academic units across the three campuses of the University of Miami with the goal of providing the highest level of educational support for students and scholars who visit and work with the libraries. Based at the Richter Library, she coordinates Learning Commons partners to provide services that range from introductory-level course consultations to sophisticated research data analysis. She also serves as the subject liaison to the Africana Studies Program and occassionally teaches for the American Studies Program. This appointment is a testament to Roxane’s dedication to the Learning Commons program and the tremendous effort she has made over the past two years to support student learning and faculty teaching.
