UML appoints new Cataloging and Metadata Management Librarian

University of Miami Libraries (UML) is pleased to announce the appointment of José Vila as the new cataloging and metadata management librarian for Metadata & Discovery Services. José comes into this new role with diverse and rich experiences from working in various international libraries. Prior to his positions with UML as Collection Maintenance supervisor and Interlibrary Loan & Course Reserves assistant for Access Services, he worked in other libraries and information centers in the United States, Belgium, and Spain. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Library and Information Science from Complutense University of Madrid in Spain.

In his new role, José is responsible for creation, maintenance, and enhancement of metadata across multiple discovery platforms and library systems, ensuring the quality of metadata and cataloging records. His main interests include rare book cataloging, improving workflow efficiencies, and quality control in cataloging departments.

José has been accepted and will enroll in the Specialist in Information post-master’s degree within the School of Information (iSchool) at Florida State University. He was awarded the American Library Association (ALA) Spectrum Scholarship in 2019. He is involved with the Southeast Florida Library Information Network Cataloging Group and is a member of ALA, Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, and Florida Library Association.
