Giving Day aims to engage 2,020 donors in 24 hours and unlock additional funds to support the University of Miami.

Ready, set, go!

On Thursday, Oct. 1, the University of Miami will celebrate its second annual #OneDayOneU Giving Day as students, alumni, parents, friends, and Hurricane fans come together to support University of Miami students, programs, research, and so much more.

The goal: secure donations from 2,020 donors within 24 hours and by doing so, it will unlock $325,000 in challenge gifts. A second pool of matching gifts totaling $263,700 is available to schools, colleges, and other units that reach their individual goals for the day.

And, as the clock ticks on and the pressure builds, leaderboards on the Giving Day website will show progress—including donor count, dollars raised, challenges met, and even a heat map showing where ’Canes are most active around the world, all in real time. Social posts with #OneDayOneU will be aggregated through Tagboard and featured on the site.

“Giving Day is a spirited day where ’Canes from all of the world can come together and support current students, faculty, researchers, and our health care heroes,” Josh Friedman, senior vice president for development and alumni relations, said. “It is a day where collectively one donation, no matter the size, can provide $590,000 in additional funds for our university.”

The all-digital event will feature social media and other engagement opportunities, including a digital scavenger hunt highlighting the impact of philanthropy at the U that will add to the fun and suspense of the day.

Numerous students, including SGA president Abigail Adeleke, have already reached out to encourage the ’Canes community to participate. “ ’Canes care for ’Canes,” Adeleke said. “And now more than ever, students need the support of alumni and the entire ’Canes family.”

Giving Day allows ’Canes to support University causes and areas they are most passionate about—from scholarships to athletics, student organizations, medical departments, and more. Interested in coral restoration? There’s a fund for that. Neurosurgery research? There’s a fund for that. UMTV, the Lowe Art Museum, mechanical engineering? There are funds for those as well.

How can students, faculty, and staff participate?

  • Ask fellow ’Canes to support an area of the University that is meaningful to them and participate in thanking them for their support.
  • Help spread the word! Promote the hashtag #OneDayOneU and share these special graphics and GIFs on your own social channels. Encourage alumni, family, and friends to get involved. Visit givingday.miami.edu to learn more.
