University of Miami Libraries (UML) is pleased to welcome Barbara M. Sorondo as the new head of Learning, Research, and Clinical Information Services at the Louis Calder Memorial Library. In her new role, she will lead a team of librarians whose expertise and knowledge base support educational, clinical, research, and administrative activities at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in support of its students, faculty, staff and residents, and primary teaching hospital personnel.

Barbara comes to UML from Florida International University (FIU) Libraries, where she served as the liaison librarian to the departments of nursing, public health, psychology, and other health sciences disciplines. While at FIU, Barbara served as the managing editor of Athenaeum, an open access, peer-reviewed collection of the scholarly works of the faculty and staff of the FIU Libraries. Additionally, Barbara’s own research focuses on information literacy in higher education and the well-being of library employees. Her work has been published in Advances in Library Administration and Organization, Florida Libraries, The Library Outreach Casebook, and other library science and psychology publications.

This appointment will be Barbara’s second position at the Calder health sciences library. Prior to her position at FIU, she managed Calder’s Interlibrary Loan Department, where she worked with numerous departments at the University of Miami, as well as libraries around the world, to ensure library users promptly received their requested information resources. She supervised the department’s staff and served students, faculty, staff, physicians, and nurses at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami Hospital, and Jackson Memorial Hospital, as well as non-affiliated researchers.

Barbara holds a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the FIU School of Education and Human Development, with a concentration in mathematics, science, and learning technologies. Her dissertation focused on information literacy instruction in higher education from the perspectives of academic librarians, faculty, and students. She also holds a Master of Science in Library and Information Studies from Florida State University and a Master of Science in Psychology from FIU.
