The University of Miami (UM) College of Arts & Sciences has developed a new graduate program—the Master of Science in Mathematical Finance (MSMF). The new program will begin taking applications in December 2015 and will enroll its first class in the fall of 2016. Taken over the course of three semesters, UM’s MSMF program equips students with the tools needed to analyze and value complex investments through a broad curriculum that includes studies in mathematics, statistical analysis, finance and programming.

“The financial industry is very competitive, and for many positions Master’s degree is a prerequisite. The new MSMF program provides students with an opportunity to embark on a fulfilling career in the financial industry by providing them with the analytical skills necessary to excel in the areas of quantitative finance and risk management,” said Dr. Leonidas G. Bachas, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Since South Florida is a major financial center, the students will also have an advantage of interacting with many high-profile financial companies during their time in the MSMF program.”

With the MSMF degree from UM, graduates have the opportunity to enter the field of quantitative and computational finance, and offer their skills to a variety of financial institutions, such as: investment and corporate banks, asset management and brokerage firms, stock exchanges, financial software companies, and finance departments of major corporations.

Director of the MSMF program Dr. Alexander Dvorsky is spearheading the launch and says, “A successful quant is one with three main weapons: programming fluency, ability to understand mathematical models, and a feel for the data. One can build a fulfilling career just by being strong in one of these areas, and our program will aim to make you good in all three.”

The MSMF courses will be taught by UM’s expert faculty within the departments of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Finance; and the MSMF Advisory Board members are leaders in the financial industry who will be interacting with the faculty and assisting in keeping the program curriculum relevant and responsive to the industry’s demands and financial trends.

"Mathematical models increasingly drive the future of global financial markets. University of Miami, with its location in metropolitan South Florida, is perfectly positioned to teach the requisite quantitative skills," said Rao Parlapalli, MSMF Advisory Board member and Director at the AlphaCrest Capital Management, NYC. Scholarships are available, and students interested in applying for the MSMF program must submit their application before the March 15, 2016 deadline.
