With courses focused on geographic information science, remote sensing, and spatial data analysis, the B.S. in Geography and Minor in Geospatial Technology will help students build skills in applications of geospatial technology related to contemporary issues, such as global urbanization, environmental sustainability, and global public health. The B.S. curriculum builds advanced skills and prepares students for careers across the public, private, and academic sectors as today’s geographic technology continues to rapidly evolve.
“Geospatial technology is used in a broad array of applications and presents career opportunities ranging from public administration and resource logistics to public health surveillance and environmental management,” said Dr. Justin Stoler, an assistant professor of geography at the UM College of Arts & Sciences. “This skill set, combined with a geographic perspective, complements virtually every program on our campus and opens additional doors to diverse careers in urban planning, resource management, international development, finance and economics, health care, emergency management and security, and many more.”
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the field of geospatial technology is in high demand specifically in the public sector and regulated industries, such as telecommunications, utilities, and transportation; the market is also growing at an annual rate of almost 35 percent.
