Art museums, universities, and colleges are vitally critical educational institutions in the United States. In the face of the intertwined crises of 2020, these sectors redoubled their equity, anti-racism, and social justice commitments. They have recognized the urgent need to address systemic, ingrained racism and other prejudices that have historically hindered the professional advancement of BIPOC individuals, women, and members of the LGBTQ+ communities. Historically, these groups have had limited access to leadership roles not only in civil society generally but also – and particularly – in the country's museums and institutions of higher education.
