SONHS Faculty Publishes in International Scientific Journal

A team of School of Nursing and Health Studies faculty has made an important contribution to the nursing education research literature, while furthering the SONHS mission of developing evidence-based methods to improve patient safety.
Their paper, “Learning from Simulation-Based Medication Event Reporting: A Mixed Methods Analysis,” appeared in the June 2015 issue of Clinical Simulation in Nursing, an international, peer-reviewed journal which is the official publication of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL). INACSL is the community of practice for simulation and for networking among simulation leaders, educators, researchers, and industry partners.

The article is based on one of the first electronic adverse event reporting systems in a simulation education program, designed by Assistant Professor Dr. Mary Mckay and her co-investigator, Jill Sanko, a SONHS Ph.D. candidate. This novel e-reporting system, which now comprises a permanent component of the school’s curriculum, received a Program Innovation Award from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare,

“In today’s environment of evidence-based clinical practice, the move is toward completely Web-based systems that professionals use to report errors and ‘near misses,’ creating a repository of such incidents in a spirit of learning,” explains Dr. Mckay, who is the SONHS safety assurance director. “The online system we created and tested mirrors almost all of the components of the reporting system used in real-world clinical practice.”
