Two SONHS Faculty Members Receive STTI Excellence in Educational Research Award

The award was presented to associate professor Deborah Salani and associate professor and associate dean for nursing undergraduate programs Mary Mckay on July 27, 2017 during the opening plenary session of STTI’s 28th International Nursing Research Congress in Dublin, Ireland.

The presentation upon which the award is based, titled “Utilization of Innovative Teaching Strategies Following a Nursing Education Certificate Program in Guyana” reports on the results of the Nursing Education Certificate Program for Guyana’s Nurse Educators. This initiative was implemented as a partnership between the SONHS’ Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO)-designated Collaborating Centre, Guyana’s Ministry of Health, PAHO headquarters in Washington, D.C. and the PAHO regional office in Guyana. The ultimate aim of the project is to build capacity among Guyana’s nurse educators, leading to sustainable improvements in Guyana’s nursing education infrastructure that will ultimately translate to improvements in patient care on the island nation. This activity aligns with UM President’s Frenk’s four defining visions for the University of Miami, collectively known as HERE (hemispheric, excellent, relevant and exemplary).

“The nursing educators in Guyana who complete our course are prepared to teach a new generation of Guyana’s nursing workforce how to deliver high-quality, safe, and compassionate care,” says Mckay. “In this way, our school through its Collaborating Centre contributes to the universal health access mission of the PAHO/WHO.”
