Annual Simulation in Healthcare Meeting Convenes

S.H.A.R.E.™ and UM make strong showing at international scientific conference, presented virtually this year as IMSH Delivers: Bringing Learning to Life
Annual Simulation in Healthcare Meeting Convenes

The 21st International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare Virtual Event opened on January 19, with over 350 presentations on the latest innovations and best practices in health care simulation to improve patient safety. The following simulation experts from the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) and Simulation Hospital for Advancing Research and Education (S.H.A.R.E.™) were among those selected to present at IMSH 2021.

  • Cynthia Foronda, immediate past president of the International Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL), is presenting “Simulation During COVID-19: Applying the INACSL Standards of Best Practice,” with INACSL current president Dr. Janet Willhaus and former president Dr. Bette Mariani. In addition, Dr. Foronda is acknowledged at the event for her Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) 2021 Article of Influence, “Virtual Simulation in Nursing Education: A Systematic Review Spanning 1996-2018.”

  • Juan E. Gonzalez, director of the DNP Program’s nurse anesthesia track, is presenting “Enhancing Simulation by Augmenting Reality: A Mixed-Reality Experience” with Drs. Linda Wunder and Nicole Gomez. This faculty trio, along with nurse anesthesia associate director Dr. Greta Mitzova-Vladinov, is also in the SimVentor Showcase, presenting “Integration of Mixed Reality and Manikin Simulation during an OR Fire Scenario,” an update on their development of an app to simulate rare but deadly airway fires.

  • Dr. Mitzova-Vladinov will serve on the COVID-19 & Impact on Anesthesia Simulation Panel, discussing “Teaching first year SRNAs induction of anesthesia: From in-person  to virtual simulation  during COVID-19.”

  • In addition to being a facilitator at IMSH, Jeffrey Groom, S.H.A.R.E.™director of Special Projects and SONHS professor of clinical, is presenting on the use of simulation for re-entry and recertification for CRNAs.

  • Donna McDermott, associate dean for simulation, is another featured speaker at the virtual event. She and Simulation Team nurse educators Dr. Evan McEwing, Michelle Osso, and Jacqueline Lopez are leading a workshop titled “Know: Do: Teach: A Prebriefing Strategy, designed to help educators prepare students for a range of simulation experiences and settings. Dr. McDermott is also co-presenting “Prebriefing: A Guide for Remote, Virtual, and Online Simulations” and “Changing Jobs: Leadership Tips for Navigating a New Simulation Culture,” as well as appearing on a live Zoom panel to discuss “Simulation Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA) during COVID 19.”

  • Jill Sanko and Mary Mckay are presenting “Participation in a Systems Thinking Simulation Experience Changes Adverse Event Reporting,” based on their award-winning publication, which was voted an SSH 2021 Article of Influence. Follow this link to hear their presentation.

This year’s IMSH annual scientific conference, hosted by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), is taking place virtually due to the pandemic, with presentations offered either live online or through the pre-recorded IMSH Delivers video collection. Access to all presentations runs through March 31, organizers note, with all virtual conference content available for registered attendees until the end of 2021.
