“The Bachas Lab was selected for exceptional cooperation and compliance with local, State and Federal regulations regarding laboratory safety,” said Jairo Betancourt, Biosafety Manager for the UM Office of Environmental Health and Safety. Betancourt recognized the lab’s long history of excellent reviews, and also noted that the lab paperwork is submitted well in advance of every deadline.
The Bachas Lab researchers include Dean Bachas, Post Doctoral Associate Dr. Elsayed Zahran and Megan Gillespie – along with Doctoral students Jeramy Baum and Ed Miller. Their research focuses on the use of nanoparticles to break down environmental contaminates.
“I am honored to share this award with an exceptional team who works hard every day to ensure the lab environment meets the highest standards of safety,” said Dean Bachas.
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety awards the Lab of the Year to one facility on each of the UM’s three campuses, which include a total of more than 1,000 labs.
Its mission is to help the University improve its compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, providing support and training in an effort to avoid occupational, biological, and chemical hazards.
