Remembering Andrea Orange, executive director for risk management

A proud ’Cane, Andrea Orange was a double University of Miami alumnus and employee at the University for more than two decades.

Andrea Orange, mother, wife, friend, and colleague passed away on Sept. 29, at the age of 48.

A double alumnus of the University of Miami, Orange received her bachelor’s degree and MBA at the U. She enjoyed an accomplished career, leading the risk management team in financial affairs, and was well known for her exceptional commitment to excellence, her passion for risk management, and love for the ’Canes family.

“Andrea had a tremendous talent for seeing things in 4-D. She was able to connect dots and make things happen,” said Pilar Schuitema, claims manager, who worked side-by-side with Orange for 17 years. “She put together a comprehensive insurance program for the U.”

A powerhouse in her field, Orange was one of the youngest directors of risk management in the country when she was selected for the position in 2001. She was also among a small group of women leaders in the industry at the time. In 2006, she was selected to participate in the Management Development Program at Harvard University.

“She was always smiling, regardless of the situation,” said Connie Nickel, associate director for facilities at the Department of Wellness and Recreation, and a colleague of Orange's for more than 20 years. “She was a wonderful mom; I remember the first day she brought her kids to the ’Canes Mini Camp. She was such a proud ’Cane.”

Orange is survived by her husband, Rodney, and two teenage sons.

“She was my mentor and an advocate for higher education,” said Jennifer Garcia Agramonte, risk management representative. “No matter how busy she was, she would always take time to speak with all of her team members. She instilled in all of us a strong work ethic, while reminding us of why we work as hard as we do—for our families.”

A GoFundMe has been set up for a scholarship for her children or a donation in her memory can be made to the Miami Business School.

On Friday, Oct. 12, services for Orange will be held at St. Augustine Catholic Church (1400 Miller Road, Coral Gables, FL 33146). The service will begin at 1:30 p.m., and a reception will follow. All are welcome to attend.
