James W. Carras
What is your current role and department at UM?
Development Associate, College of Engineering, Division of Development and Alumni Relations
What degree will you be receiving this coming graduation?
Master of Science in Leadership, Miami Herbert Business School
How long have you been in service at UM?
Four years this month!
What were some highlights of your time as a student and employee?
As a student at the Miami Herbert Business School, I witnessed the tremendous improvements made by Dean Quelch. I learned about myself and my colleagues through courses, including negotiation, high-performing teams, and leading change. I also learned hard skills, such as accounting, finance, marketing, and corporate strategy. Joining the UCatholic Graduate Student Association was a special opportunity to participate in Wednesday night Bible studies, which kept me positive and motivated during long days of work and school. Likewise, celebrating UM Alumni Weekend & Homecoming in 2018 with one of our generous scholarship donors showed me the deep pride our alumni have for their alma mater.
What is a favorite UM memory of yours?
One of the top sporting events I've ever attended was the 2017 UM vs. Notre Dame football game at the Hard Rock Stadium. The stadium was rocking, and it took many of us back to the glory days at the Orange Bowl. Moreover, it showed that the future of ’Canes football is bright!
Have you received any awards, honors or special achievements?
2019 Business of Healthcare Conference, VITAS Scholar
Please share any advice that you might have for employees looking to go back to school:
I would highly recommend that any of my UM colleagues considering returning to school recognize a passion or interest and find the right academic program that fits. Take this time working from home to research the tuition-remission eligible programs at UM and begin your application.
