2020 graduating employee

John Ness

What is your current role and department at UM?

I am a senior academic advisor with the Miami Herbert Business School.

What degree will you be receiving this coming graduation?
I will earn a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies with my main concentration on creative writing and literature.

How long have you been in service at UM?
5 years

What were some highlights of your time as a student and employee?

The pleasure of working with and for undergraduate and graduate students inside and outside of the classroom. Serving in the roles of advisor, instructor, and student were all rewarding on so many different levels.

What is a favorite UM memory?

Two memories are paramount to me. 1) When I was tapped into the Iron Arrow Society this semester. I was surprised, honored, and humbled by this amazing recognition. 2) When the “U Vote” political awareness and advocacy initiative I created this year with GSA for the graduate and doctoral communities on all three campuses was implemented and accepted so successfully by UM students.

Have you received any awards, honors, or special achievements?

I was tapped into the Iron Arrow Honor Society and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society this year and was named the recipient of this year's Student Government Patricia A. Whitely Unsung Hero Award.

Please share any advice that you might have for employees looking to go back to school.

Don't ever question your ability or dedication to earn your UM graduate degree. You can do it. Make the most of all your experiences as both a student and employee at the U.
