Rafael I. Nepomechie, professor of physics at the College of Arts and Sciences, was recognized with the 2023–24 Outstanding Teaching Award by the Faculty Senate for his exceptional contributions to student learning and growth.

“Professor Nepomechie's teaching is characterized by innate talent, meticulous preparation, and dedication to his students' learning and intellectual growth,” shared George C. Alexandrakis, professor of physics, in his nomination letter.

Since joining the University in 1986, Nepomechie has taught 17 different courses at the University of Miami across all levels of the curriculum, which have received many positive reviews from students. He has been praised for being accessible during office hours and for making difficult concepts easy to understand. Notably, his introduction of a new course on quantum computing has been described by undergraduate and graduate students alike as a "life-changing experience."

“Although a theoretical physicist and distinguished research scholar, whose research has been funded by the National Science Foundation for 31 years, Nepomechie takes the time to learn and present in his lectures live demonstrations that are very helpful to the students' understanding,” shared Alexandrakis.

Presented by the University’s Faculty Senate, the Outstanding Teaching Award recognizes outstanding teaching by a faculty member with a substantial record of teaching at the University.

The 2023–24 Faculty Senate Awards Ceremony will be held in person on Monday, April 8, at 5 p.m. on the Coral Gables Campus. Learn more about the awards ceremony.
