With hurricane season already upon us—and to remain well prepared for any other severe weather year round—the University of Miami recently renewed its status as a StormReady university via the National Weather Service, extending its certification through 2019.
StormReady institutions must complete rigorous training and preparations to ensure community members maintain the communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property before, during, and after weather-related events.
To maintain the StormReady designation, the University highlighted enhancements made to its capabilities for continually monitoring local weather conditions, while demonstrating the ability to alert students, faculty, and staff about severe weather conditions through multiple channels of communication, as necessary.
Led by the Office of Emergency Management, the recertification process also involved hosting a Storm Spotter training class for more than 30 UM employees, who learned how to spot and report potential severe weather, in addition to enhancing their knowledge of safety behaviors for dealing with such occurrences. Members of the Office of Emergency Management staff also visited and toured the local National Weather Service facility to strengthen working relationships with key members of the NWS office.
The University will continue to enhance its weather-monitoring capabilities on all campuses, which will allow for quicker and more accurate dissemination of information to the community when severe weather strikes. For more information, visit http://prepare.miami.edu/before-emergency/stormready.
