Holidays in Miami

Is there a better place to spend the holidays than Miami? Endless sunshine, a fresh ocean breeze, and a city with vibrant cultural traditions around every corner. While there is no wrong way to celebrate this holiday season, we’re highlighting some of Miami's most well-known traditions and sharing a list of fun things to do in our favorite city.

Celebrate with Noche Buena essentials

What do you know about Noche Buena? In short, it translates from Spanish to English to say “good night” and is used as a term to describe a celebratory meal enjoyed with loved ones. While noche buena is commonly celebrated on Dec. 24, in the United States and around the world, many Miamians have developed their own noche buena traditions. The best part? Regardless of your heritage or religious beliefs, everyone is invited to enjoy a “good night.”

We’re sharing some of the top essentials for enjoying Noche Buena in Miami so that everyone can join in on the fun.

  • Pork. Sometimes called lechón or pernil, and often cooked in a caja china, or a large box where an entire pig is placed below hot coals, pork tends to steal the spotlight for meat-eaters.
  • The sides. Not a fan of pork? No need to skip noche buena--the sides are enough to fill up anyone’s plate. Traditionally yuca (deep-fried or boiled), plantains (tostones or maduros), and rice and beans find room at the table.
  • Still have room? Desserts are a staple and can vary depending on tradition. You can find anything from turrón, a traditional Christmas dessert from Spain, to tres leches (three milk cake) and everything in between. There aren’t too many rules when it comes to dessert, right?
  • Holiday drinks. Noche Buena tends to take eggnog to another level. Try a glass of traditional coquito or crema de vie and decide which version is your favorite.
    • Pro tip: find someone who has perfected their homemade recipe and ask them to share.
  • Games. Since Noche Buena is all about enjoying time with those around you why not dust off the old dominos and start a game? Family and friends young and old will be able to join in and enjoy the time together.
