Touchpoints of a faculty career

By Life@TheU
University of Miami faculty dedicate their lives to inspiring students and expanding the horizons of knowledge and discovery. In celebration of their contributions, we asked several of this spring’s retiring faculty about their most memorable moments at the U.

“Being appointed as the James L. Knight Professor of Biomedical Engineering was of course a highlight of my career. But what can top University of Miami’s 2001 NCAA Football Championship?”

“One of my favorite memories from UM was taking the flute ensemble to perform at flute conventions and the New York Flute Fair; hearing the flute ensemble perform some of my own transcriptions for them was truly amazing.”

“Being able to attend the many commencement ceremonies at which my doctoral students received their degrees—that will always be the highlight of my time here.”

“Being able to lead a wonderful, fully collaborative, highly engaged field research team of young people, diverse on every dimension, through a large and complex R01 funded study called JUEGA!, which involved Miami-Dade Public School students was a great highlight for me.”

“One of my favorite memories of UM will always be my regular pre-lunch walks around our beautiful Gables campus, which I hope to continue as emeritus professor!”

"On my initial appointment in 1967, I was able to secure the agreement of the administration so that our department would have a presence at Coral Gables, allowing us to offer a B.S. degree program. This has become a major undertaking and an asset to the College of Arts and Sciences, I am proud to have played a part in it."

With deep appreciation for their distinguished service, we extend our congratulations to all the retiring faculty of Spring 2019.
