All about Faculty Senate

Faculty members have the opportunity to share in the planning and governance of the University through the Faculty Senate. As a deliberative and legislative body, the Senate plays an important role in a number of collegial matters, including academic policies, proposals for developing new programs and degree approvals, compensation and the annual budgets, and reviews of chairs and deans.

Meetings are open to all faculty members and held monthly during the academic year typically on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m., unless noted. View the 2019-20 meeting schedule. Note: The meeting on Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. on the medical campus will be hosted by President Frenk.

Newly elected Senate leaders

In April, the Faculty Senate elected new officers for the 2019-20 academic year, which include the Miami Business School’s Linda Neider as chair, the School of Law’s JoNel Newman as first vice chair, and the Miller School of Medicine’s Helen Bramlett as second vice chair. Senators are elected from each school for three year terms and Senate officers are elected annually.

Faculty Senate awards

Each spring the Faculty Senate awards are presented to three individuals. These include the James W. McLamore Outstanding Service Award, the Outstanding Teaching Award, and the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award. Submit your nomination to facsen@miami.edu by Wednesday, Oct. 23 for consideration.
