As announced earlier this year, the Faculty Senate awards—which recognize and foster excellence—honor outstanding faculty members who are nominated and selected by their peers based on significant contributions to the University of Miami. Unable to gather in April, as is traditionally done, because of the pandemic, the Senate will host a virtual celebration on Monday, Sept. 21, at 5 p.m., and the University of Miami community is invited to register to attend.

Among the award recipients—including the Outstanding Teaching Award, the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award, and the James W. McLamore Outstanding Service Award being presented to Dr. Kara CavoutoA. Michael Froomkin, and Steve Cantrell, respectively—the senate will recognize two additional faculty members in honor of their service to the University.

Dr. Tomas A. Salerno, a tenured professor of surgery and adjunct professor of anesthesiology at the Miller School of Medicine, served as senate chair from 2014 through 2019, one of the three longest serving chairs. Dr. David J. Birnbach, currently professor of public health and anesthesiology, obstetrics, and gynecology at the Miller School of Medicine, is the former director of the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Hospital Center for Patient Safety and executive vice provost for the Office of Faculty Affairs. During his 13-year tenure in faculty affairs, Birnbach oversaw the promotion and tenure process along with mentoring, diversity and inclusion, recognition, and development programs.

Nominations for the 2020-21 awards are now being accepted and are due no later than Wednesday, Oct. 21. Learn more about the James W. McLamore Outstanding Service Award, which recognizes service above and beyond the call of duty by a member of the University community; the Outstanding Teaching Award, which recognizes outstanding teaching by a faculty member with a substantial record of teaching at the University; and the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award, which recognizes either a single outstanding scholarly achievement or a lifetime of distinguished accomplishment in any area of research or creative activity.
