5 things you need to know this week

A weekly series designed to highlight events, benefits, perks, and items of interest for University of Miami faculty and staff.

Take on a well-being challenge.
Begins Monday, Feb. 1, and ends Sunday, Feb. 28.
Find inspiration in four themes that power the 28-day well-being challenge—self-care, kindness, gratitude, and connection/belonging. Register to participate in the challenge, hosted by the University’s Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, that encourages participants to engage in healthier choices while sparking an interest in simple actions that can lead to changes in lifestyle. Each day in February will feature a simple activity to motivate and stimulate a mindset of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Participants will be invited to attend 30-minute webinars that reinforce a weekly theme, as well as a celebration of accomplishments on Thursday, Feb. 25, at noon or 6 p.m. Learn more about the “Leap into Well-Being” initiative.

Sign up for the Walking ’Canes.
Register by Monday, Feb. 22.
As part of the University's Well ’Canes Incentive program, eligible University employees can participate in Walking ’Canes, a 14-week step challenge. Participants may use the baseline week—Monday, Feb. 1, to Sunday, Feb. 7—to determine initial step count and ensure their step tracking device is properly synced. The challenge kicks off on Monday, Feb. 15, and all participants must complete their registration by Monday, Feb. 22. Participants who meet their step goal can earn up to 500 core incentive points. Learn to foster anti-racism in the workplace.
Tuesday, Feb. 9, and Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 9 a.m.
University faculty, staff, and students have the opportunity to participate in a discussion series on the importance of inclusive leadership and awareness in cultivating a culture of anti-racism in the workplace. Presented by the Department of Management at the Miami Herbert Business School as part of the One Book, One U programming, panel discussions will include consciousness of implicit bias, micro/macro-aggressions, bullying, harassment, and the strength of diversity and inclusion in any organization. View the program and register to attend the two-day event. For additional information, contact Marisol Capellan, associate director of the Master’s in Leadership program, at mcapellan@miami.edu. Go for a walk—and learn something new.
Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 6:30 p.m.
Pair physical activity with learning while on an evening stroll. Every second Tuesday of the month, UHealth Fitness and Wellness Center will host a U Walk & Learn session. Take a stroll around your neighborhood or hop on the nearest treadmill and tune in to this virtual event. Employees enrolled in UM’s Well ’Canes Incentive program can earn points by logging steps in their account—and can boost their progress in the Walking ’Canes challenge, which launches Feb. 15. The event on Tuesday, Feb. 9, will focus on stretching for the mind and body. View the schedule of dates and register now. For more information, send an email to Lindsey at LXS1305@med.miami.edu.
